About University of Illinois at Springfield

The University of Illinois at Springfield, also known as UIS, is a liberal arts university in Springfield, which is the capital of the US state of Illinois, as well as the county seat of Sangamon County, having a population estimated at a number of more than 116 000 inhabitants, during the 2010 census. The most famous past resident is Abraham Lincoln, who lived in Springfield from 1837 until he went to the White House in 1861.

UIS was established in 1969, by the Illinois General Assembly, first starting as Sangamon State University, which became a part of the University of Illinois system on July 1, 1995. Today, the university has a total enrollment approximated at a number of nearly 5000 students, enrolled in 21 undergraduate programs, 20 master's programs, and a doctorate in Public Administration.
